2019 LEADERS IN CARE AWARDS: LEADER OF THE FUTURE
This award honours the up and coming stars in the industry who are making waves and climbing up the career ladder through the demonstration of leadership, passion and new ideas.
We are delighted to announce that the 2019 shortlist includes the following names:
Omar Taylor, Care UK
With a diverse portfolio of care experience garnered in the UK and US, Omar is undoubtedly a leader of the future and a worthy candidate for this award. Having worked in learning disabilities, mental health and residential care, Omar brought over 13 years of experience to Care UK when he joined in 2016. He has already been promoted numerous times, starting out as a Home Manager, before progressing to a Relief Manager and then Operations Support Manager, respectively. His latest promotion was in March 2019 to the role of Regional Director for the South Midlands. This rapid progression in such a short period of time is unheard of, and stands testimony to Omar’s leadership skills and eligibility for this award. In his current role, Omar has an expansive remit consisting of the day-to-day line management of five Home Managers in relation to the safe operation of four homes in Stroud, Cheltenham, Newbury and Oxfordshire. Fulfilling the role of Regional Director is a tall order, but Omar has proven that he is the right leader for the challenge. In the last 12 months, two homes that Omar oversaw in his role as Operations Support Manager were raised to ‘outstanding’. One of the homes – Manor Lodge -, has 120 beds, and the Inspector stated that it was unheard of for a home of this size to receive this rating.
Sarah Mair, Bupa
Sarah has shown herself to be one of Bupa’s most compassionate, caring and capable colleagues. With her commitment to learning and development – both for herself and those around her – this has seen her rise from a care assistant to home manager in just four years. In the last 12 months alone, Sarah has progressed from a care manager to Bupa’s youngest ever Home Manager and has played an integral role in turning around a home facing significant challenges – The Arkley in North London where she took on the role of care manager in 2017. The home had been struggling, with a mix of ‘requires improvement’ and ‘inadequate’ ratings from the CQC. With the support of her home manager, Sarah turned the home around and in less than a year it was rated ‘good’ in all areas. In August 2018, exactly a year after joining, Sarah was promoted to Deputy Manager – but change was afoot again a month later, when the Home Manager was promoted to a regional role. Sarah immediately stepped up as Interim Home Manager and – after proving she was a natural fit – was made permanent four months later. Her ascent has been one of the quickest in Bupa’s history, as is not only testament to her natural talents for care and leadership but her continued self-improvement.
Suzanne Scholz, The Hamptons, New Care
Suzanne has over 10 years’ experience in the health and social care sector, qualifying with a first-class honours degree as a mental health nurse as a mature student. Her previous experience of running her own business and working in the banking industry gives her a unique blend of skills, which she utilises extremely well, seamlessly incorporating them into her role as home manager at The Hamptons. As such, she is quite unique in her understanding of what makes a successful care home and strong care team, which ultimately results in positive outcomes for her residents, their relatives and staff. Suzanne demonstrates impressive leadership skills daily and she is a truly professional home manager. She is calm, caring and kind in all of her dealings with residents, their relatives and staff, as well as external professionals, forming positive relationships with everyone she comes into contact with. Her knowledge and passion combined, create a real sense of teamwork and friendship at The Hamptons, which benefits staff in their working environment, and residents in their home. Suzanne’s zest for continual improvement is evident in all that she does, and she adds value to everything she touches. With the desire to drive her team forward, to always go the extra mile and dare to do things differently, Suzanne is most certainly one to watch in the future.
Rebecca Woodcock, Belong
Rebecca Woodcock is an outstanding, passionate and motivated care professional, who has worked for Belong for much of her 20-year career in the profession, working her way up from junior support roles to this year being appointed as a new General Manager, set to lead the latest Belong village, due to open in Birkdale next year. She rose to distinction in her previous role as the registered manager for Belong Wigan, which celebrated its ten-year anniversary earlier this year by earning a rating of ‘outstanding’ from the Care Quality Commission overall and in no less than four out of five areas.Since being appointed to the General Manager role for Belong Birkdale earlier this year, Rebecca has already proven her collaborative skills, establishing numerous local connections with community groups, carers centres, local councillors, schools, NHS organisations and the local authority. She has the tenacity to overcome any challenges that may arise in establishing a new village and, crucially, her experience at Belong Wigan has equipped her with the skills to recruit the right people to the village and retain them through positive support and mentoring. Importantly, she also appreciates the imperative to nurture a vibrant community in each Belong village and has the people skills, the leadership and management abilities and the commercial awareness to make a success of this new location.
Rosie Howell, RD Capital Partners
Rosie Howell joined RDCP Care as Registered Manager of Kings Bromley Care Home. In October 2017, Rosie was promoted to Regional Manager. In February 2019, Rosie was promoted to Senior Operations Manager. Her rise at RDCP Care might seem phenomenal, but Rosie has worked extremely hard and demonstrated a keenness to go beyond the call of duty. The company would be amiss to not recognise and reward this. All six of RDCP Care’s nursing homes have a ‘good’ CQC or CIW-equivalent rating. Rosie Howell, as Senior Operations Manager, has been the team leader in ensuring care quality is of the highest level. Some healthcare professionals are investors or finance people who do not really understand care. Others are just nurses or carers who have risen the ranks and do not really understand business. What makes Rosie Howell stand out is that she is a nurse by profession, but is fully adept at running a large healthcare group profitably, and even knows of all the movements in the sector.
