The registered manager is indisputably the key position within a care home. The manager sets the tone of the home by providing a lead to staff through establishing and driving a caring culture and the pursuit of excellence.

We are delighted to announce that the 2019 shortlist includes the following names:

Tracy Norbury, Hollins Park, Care UK

Tracy is a visionary manager who has combined her extensive experience with a natural empathy and compassion to make Hollins Park a great place for residents to live and a nurturing environment for colleagues to work.  Having spent her entire career at Hollins Park, starting out in the kitchen before becoming a carer, and then training to be a nurse, Tracy knows the home inside out, and understands what is needed to drive its success.  This knowledge is reflected in the home’s impressive credentials.  In the last 12 months, Hollins Park has achieved one of the lowest staff absence rates in the whole of Care UK.  Tracy has worked tirelessly to develop a motivated team where staff retention has improved by 30%.  In fact, Hollins Park has the lowest staff turnover rate year on year in the whole of Care UK.  This is in no small thanks to Tracy’s commitment to making each team member feel valued and helping them to see the important part they play in residents’ lives. Tracy’s unfaltering mission to provide the best care for residents hasn’t gone unnoticed.  A recent CQC report came through with four out of five key lines of enquiry rated ‘Outstanding’, which is unheard of in the whole of Cheshire.

Daniel Rowark, Bucklesham Grange, Hallmark Care Homes

Since his appointment as a Clinical Care Manager in January 2016, Daniel has excelled within Hallmark, being promoted to General Manager in June 2017 and receiving an outstanding CQC rating from the Care Quality Commission in September that same year. Under Daniel’s support and guidance, the two homes he manages; Bucklesham Grange in Ipswich, Suffolk and Anisha Grange in Billericay, Essex have an outstanding and good CQC rating, respectively. They have also both moved from a high level of agency usage to 0% with staff attrition also reduced from 48% in 2018 to 13% in 2019. Daniel is passionate about creating a positive culture in the workplace and has successfully built relationships with residents at both homes, addressed negative feedback and introduced ‘high five moments’ to recognise team and resident successes in the home at their daily 10 at 10 meetings. He has also helped to support career progression for team members by identifying opportunities for development and then implementing an induction into the new role to assist with transition. Daniel has also been a key member of Hallmark’s three-year ‘Together’ dementia strategy with Bucklesham Grange becoming the first home in the group to achieve all 11 of its outcomes. He has also created a fall prevention clinical improvement plan which has resulted in Bucklesham being bed rail free for three years and has introduced a new workshop for nurses and seniors to share best practice.

Nicola Soulsby, Bupa Queensmount

After starting as a care home cleaner, aged 14, Nicola Soulsby realised her love for care after seeing the tangible difference she could make for residents. This passion has stayed with her ever since, and she’s spent more than 30 years dedicated to improving the lives of older people. However, it’s Nikki’s achievements in recent months that set her apart from the rest. Earlier this year she led Bupa Queensmount to achieve a perfect CQC rating with ‘Outstanding’ status in all five areas. Thanks to Nikki’s leadership, the nursing home is one of only a handful in England to achieve the incredible accolade. While historically the home had a good reputation, standards slipped after a change in management. As such, when Nikki was appointed manager in 2014, the home was non-complaint with CQC guidelines and under an admission ban from the local authority. Nikki was immediately committed to driving changes and by the first CQC inspection under her leadership, the home returned to full compliance, achieving ‘Good’ ratings in all areas. It was then that Nikki challenged herself to achieving an ‘Outstanding’ rating in the next inspection – a task she achieved while exceeding all expectations.

Sam Gallagher, Brandon Park Nursing Home, Stow Healthcare

Sam Gallagher is a first time manager who, with passion, leadership and hard work has turned a failing nursing home into one that is a beacon of quality care and rated as ‘outstanding’ by CQC.  Sam has worked at the home for four and a half years, first as deputy and for the last 18 months as home manager.  She embraces the role of a hands on manager with aplomb and goes beyond her job description to be a mother figure, team coach, clinical expert and problem solver as well as diligently managing budgets and day to day home operations. Sam is consistently praised by residents and families for the way in which she places her residents at the heart of the home. Under her leadership, residents have gained newly found independence, which has included supporting the home administrator with daily tasks, cooking batches of mince pies and other delights. Since Brandon Park gained its outstanding rating, Sam has not rested on her laurels, but has consistently encouraged and supported her team to strive higher, which saw the home re-rated as outstanding in 2018.

Anne Riches, Bagders Wood, Larchwood Care

Anne Riches has been the registered manager for Badgers Wood for over 14 years, leading a team of staff, some of whom have also had long service at the home. In March 2019, Anne successfully led her team to receive a worthy ‘outstanding’ inspection report in three KLOEs. Anne is a truly inspirational leader who is able to keep the staff team well motivated and engaged in delivering excellent standards of care at all times. Staff development is an important part of Anne’s values. As a leader, Anne has a clear vision of what she wants to achieve for the home and the residents and is able to share this with the staff team. She has a natural, positive attitude and is always available to anyone that needs her; she operates an open-door policy so that people can come and talk to her and know that they will be heard. Anne has an amazing team of staff and she ensures they feel valued and included in the home’s successes. She made it clear to the team that everyone’s work contributed to the recent ‘outstanding’ rating.
