Your Care Rating has reported its highest scores to date in its annual feedback survey from care home residents and their families and friends.

The 2018-19 survey generated two independent Overall Performance Ratings (OPR) marked out of 1,000 from care home residents and their relatives and friends.

The residents’ survey revealed an average OPR of 882 with family and friends achieving an overall score of 842.

Residents in Warwickshire (905 OPR) were the most positive about the care they received followed by those in Birmingham and the Black Country, both with an average rating of 900.

In the family and friends survey, North Yorkshire (885) came out on top just ahead of the South Coast (865).

Care homes are rated in four areas: Staff and Care, Home Comforts, Choice and Having a Say, and Quality of Life.

Quality of Life scored the highest rating for both residents and their families.

By individual care home, Anchor’s Abbeywood care home in Aldershot and MHA’s Cedar Lawn care home in Stratford-upon-Avon came joint top with 998 out of 1,000.

MHA’s Willesden Court in North London came in third (997) with NorseCare’s Linden Court in Thetford, fourth (995).

In the Family and Friends’ Survey, Greensleeves’ Borovere Residential Home in Alton came first (987) followed by MHA’s Maple Leaf House in Ripley (982) and Greensleeves’ Torkington House (973) in Acton.

Sam Monaghan, Chief Executive of MHA, said: “What is great to see from the Your Care Rating survey is how our residents feel happy and fulfilled living in our homes and how they value the care they receive from our dedicated staff. Families are able to see at a glance how our homes are committed to raising standards and being transparent as they take part in the survey. Every care home resident should be able to speak up about their care and this is what the Your Care Rating survey does – it gives them a voice.”

Paul Newman, Chief Executive of Greensleeves Care, said:  “We are delighted that two of our care homes, Borovere and Torkington House, performed so strongly in the Your Care Rating Family and Friends Survey.  Greensleeves Care puts a strong emphasis on the quality of care we deliver to residents at each of our care homes and we are thrilled that this has been recognised by the family members and friends of our residents.”

Jane Ashcroft CBE, Anchor Hanover’s Chief Executive, said: “We are thrilled that Abbeywood in Ash Vale is the top scoring care home in the country in the Your Care Rating 2018-19 Residents’ Survey. The home is already rated outstanding by our regulator the Care Quality Commission so I am proud of all the team there and their hard work to maintain high standards of care.

“I’m also pleased that Anchor Hanover as an organisation has performed above the national average again. Every year since 2013, we’ve seen our results improve and this year we are 17 points above the national average – with an overall score of 899 out of a possible 1,000.”

Mel Knight, Founding Director of Your Care Rating said: “All too often, the care home sector is reported and perceived negatively, but Your Care Rating continues to show that, amongst the residents and their loved ones, there are very high levels of satisfaction in care homes across the UK. The survey provides an authoritative source of information for those looking for a care home, thanks to the meaningful voices of those living in care homes, as well as their family and friends.”
