Campaigner urges CCTV adoption in care home communal areas

Safety monitoring campaigner Jayne Connery has urged care home providers to install CCTV in their communal areas.

The Director of the Care Campaign for the Vulnerable issued the call yesterday at the Dementia, Care & Nursing Home Expo at the NEC, Birmingham.

“We have to start looking at safety monitoring as a positive care assist took across the sector,” Jayne said.

“This is about openness and better transparency for the care provider as well as the carer.”

Jayne said CCTV offered protection for staff wrongly accused following an abuse incident and offered proactive support for staff when safeguarding issues occurred.

The campaigner said installation of the technology could also provide commercial benefits for providers by helping to secure higher occupancy levels.

Andrew Geach, CEO of Shedfield Lodge in Hampshire, said he had increased his number of cameras from an initial two to 18 and wanted to add more.

Andrew said the cameras could be used remotely by a manager to monitor their home when off their premises and could save the NHS tens of thousands of pounds in unnecessary emergency call out costs.

“We can now deal with eight out of ten falls in-house rather call 999,” Andrew said.

“We invite family members to come in and look at the cameras. It’s about us all working together in the sector – families, carers and care providers.”
