Care home facing closure criticised for failing to make improvements

A care home which has been slated for closure following difficulties in attracting and retaining workers has been criticised for failing to make improvements.

In its latest report, the Care Inspectorate found that Banks O’Dee Care Home, which is run by Four Seasons, had made just one of 11 required improvements.

Inspectors found that the home, which Four Seasons confirmed it would be closing in March (see Four Seasons confirms care home closure), still emitted an unpleasant odour despite systems and processes being in place to address and monitor cleanliness.

Residents were also observed walking around “aimlessly” with staff making little attempt to interact with them or involve them in meaningful activities.

A number of residents were found to have spent a significant period of up to 15 hours in bed.

Inspectors also found poor planning of food and fluid needs with residents having lunch within an hour of breakfast.

The report added: “Families were distressed that their relative’s routines were not being maintained.

“Staff seemed dismissive at times of the impact this had on the residents and their wellbeing.”

A Four Seasons spokesperson said: “We announced in February that we intended to cease operating the home, having been concerned for some time that it had not been meeting the standards that we expect our homes to provide and that the Care Inspectorate requires. This has been exacerbated by difficulties in recruiting and retaining colleagues with the right skills in the local jobs market. We are working with the Health and Social Care Partnership to support residents and their families to make alternative care arrangements and have brought in additional senior clinical support to ensure the wellbeing of residents during this process.”

Four Seasons told CHP that 11 residents remained at the home, with three moving next week and a further four with confirmed moving dates.
