Care home goes from Outstanding to Inadequate in 12 months

An Oakdale Care Group care home has gone from Outstanding in just over 12 months.

Kingfisher Court in Nottinghamshire was rated Inadequate in all categories following an inspection in June, having previously been given the CQC’s top rating.

The latest CQC inspection was brought forward due to “multiple concerns” raised by staff, relatives and visiting professionals, which included: unsafe staffing levels, people having unexplained bruises, a poor management culture, medicines concerns, dehydration, poor moving and handling of people, an unsafe analysis and response to incidents, cleanliness and not following infection control procedures, lack of activities, delays in care and people appearing unkempt.

Andrew Long, CEO of Oakdale Care Group said: “Oakdale is incredibly disappointed that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has rated Kingfisher Court as Inadequate.  Whilst we were aware of issues in the home and were working to address them at the time of the inspection, the inspectors’ findings have hit Oakdale to the core.  We send our sincere apologies to the residents of the home for the decrease in service standards at the care home.

“Oakdale prides itself in the high-quality care it provides.  Having previously been rated as an outstanding care home, we cherished Kingfisher Court as an example of the type of care that we expect to be delivered in Oakdale’s homes.  All our teams have therefore reflected deeply on the CQC’s findings and the reasons for the reduction in quality, looking to make immediate improvements and prevent such issues in the future.”

Andrew said it was testimony to the commitment of the home’s staff that morale and process management at the service had been quickly restored. He added that recent talks with the CQC and Nottinghamshire Council Adult Safeguarding team had been “positive and constructive” and Oakdale was keen to accept the regulator’s offer of lessons learned shared analysis for future reference.
