Four care home workers dismissed following video evidence of physical abuse

Four care home staff have been dismissed following the emergence of video evidence of the physical and emotional abuse of a resident.

The dismissals took place at Elvy Court Care Home in Sittingbourne, Kent, which is run by Avery Healthcare.

In its latest inspection of the service, which was rated Requires Improvement, the CQC said: “This inspection was prompted by video evidence received by the local safeguarding of adults authority. The authority concluded the evidence showed that a person living in the service had experienced physical abuse due to rough treatment and emotional abuse.”

The CQC added that the local authority had also found evidence that the resident had not been correctly assisted to change position when in bed, which had increased the risk of them developing sore skin. The resident had not also been safely supported when drinking to avoid the risk of choking, the CQC said.

An Avery Healthcare spokesperson said: “Avery Healthcare were deeply saddened over this incident as it stands in stark contrast to the standards expected and the reputation of the group, and the efforts made to recruit the best staff and then to provide continuous training to ensure the best in care. The rest of the staff group in Elvy Court are equally dismayed as this in no way reflects the high quality of care that they deliver every day to our residents. They do not wish the poor behaviour by a tiny minority to be a benchmark by which they are all judged.

“On receipt of the information the company took immediate action even prior to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) arrival and dismissed the staff involved for their failings.

“Our focus and attentions then quickly moved to working with the family, as they have chosen to keep their relative at Elvy Court, and the local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the resident involved, and to examine all policies and procedures to ensure that all residents are protected and cared for, as they, their families and we would expect.

“The CQC had little other option than to issue a revised result in some of their assessment categories, and every effort will be made by the company and the staff with their support to re-establish Elvy Court quickly back to the previous rating of Good in all areas.”
