NMC CEO Andrea Sutcliffe praises ‘vital contribution’ of social care nurses

NMC chief executive and registrar, Andrea Sutcliffe CBE, has praised the “vital contribution” made by social care nurses.

Andrea was among the keynote speakers at the Care England Workforce Matters conference at Church House, Westminster yesterday.

Andrea said: “On occasion nurses in social care are treated as second class citizens. It is not acceptable that people are treated in that way. We need to value the nurses we have got.”

The NMC chief executive said her organisation had to be more embracing of all the settings its members working in.

There are currently around 40,000 nurses working in adult social care.

Andrea said people in social care were presenting with ever more complex needs and co-morbidities with expectations of ever better levels of care.

“Nurses play a really significant role in providing person centred care and do an amazing job,” Andrea noted.

She added that nurses in social care were often “quite isolated” and deserved greater recognition.

The NMC boss said social care nurses had to meet the same standards as nurses in healthcare and there was no need to make any distinction between the two.

In addition to flying the flag for social care nurses at the event, Andrea has also issued a statement on the NMC website in which she acknowledges the “vital contribution” they make to the sector.
