Recruitment challenges force Runwood Homes care home to end nursing provision

A national shortage of registered nurses and reliance on agency staff has forced a Mansfield care home to end its nursing provision.

Runwood Homes’ Maun View, which accommodates up to 77 people, announced it had deregistered its 19 nursing beds.

Gavin O’Hare-Connolly, Chief Operating Officer, said: “It is always regretful to have to make such decisions given the impact on our residents who share our home, however, the current nursing crisis is impacting on the care home sector in a major way.

“I must be assured that our ethos is continuously upheld and cannot guarantee the level of quality expected whilst relying on agency nursing staff.  All families and residents have been supported by the team, to ensure they are fully informed and able to state preferences for new accommodation prior to moving home.”

Runwood Homes said it was supporting the 12 residents affected by the deregistration with a “seamless transition to new accommodation” and would now only offer residential care at the home.

The home was rated ‘requires improvement’ in all areas following its last inspection by the CQC.

The CQC commented: “Staffing levels were not enough to keep people safe and meet their individual care needs.”

Residents and staff told inspectors of their concerns over staffing levels. One staff member commented: “There aren’t always enough staff to keep people safe.”

The CQC said Runwood Homes had taken immediate action to address insufficient staffing levels it had found.

Recruitment challenges have seen a number of leading care home providers, including Anchor Hanover, pull out of nursing care. HC-One announced it was ending provision at a home in Cheshire in June.
