Risedale Estates qualifies first five registered nurses

Risedale Estates coverts its first five assistant practitioners into registered nurses as part of a partnership with the Open University.

Led by the director of nursing at Risedale, Barbara Johnson, a course was launched to train assistant practitioners in 2010 alongside the University of Cumbria.

In 2015, Johnson and Risedale partnered with the Open University to convert assistant practitioners into registered nurses using the apprenticeship levy to train the nurses over a four-year programme.

The five nurses, Emily, Joanna, Faye, Sue and Jenny, competed their BSc (hons) Nursing last month.

By offering the training, Risedale has ensured that it will always have internally trained registered nurses, nursing associates and assistant practitioners to care for its 326 residents.

Currently, a further 14 student nurses are undertaking the four-year apprenticeship and in January 2020, 10 further assistant practitioners will convert to registered nurses.
