Shaw healthcare agrees care home lease with Powys County Council

Shaw healthcare has agreed a lease with Powys County Council for over 300 residential beds at 13 care homes across mid-Wales.

The provider will operate 12 local authority care homes covering the Newtown, Machynlleth and Ystradgynlais areas from June 2019 to June 2022. The provider will also jointly run an integrated care facility with Powys Teaching Health Board at Glan Irfon in Builth Wells.

Commercial & development director, Geraint Evans, said: “We are extremely proud to be working with Powys County Council and look forward to delivering care to the residents of the homes. We have developed a number of local authority agreements over recent years, meaning we can provide the high standard of training for staff, as well the investment in facilities that Shaw prides itself on across the UK.”

Shaw’s local authority deals include multi-million pound developments in Poole and Liverpool.

The provider was appointed after a competitive tender process following the conclusion of a contract between the council and Bupa.

The homes were originally intended to be included in a takeover deal with HC-One but the plans were dropped after the council threatened to block the transfer (see EXCLUSIVE: HC-One drops ‘complex’ transfer of Bupa Powys homes).

Taking over the facilities will lead to a 20% increase in the number of beds operated by Shaw, boosting its number of care homes across the UK to 75, and will see more than 400 employees transfer over to the firm.

Council portfolio holder for Adult Social Care, Councillor Stephen Hayes, said: “We are very pleased to partner with Shaw healthcare, a Welsh-based company which is largely staff-owned. As a council our priority is to ensure safe, high quality care and support for the residents of these homes and we are confident that Shaw healthcare will be a positive partner for Powys County Council and the Powys Teaching Health Board.”
