Sheffield based care provider praised for use of anti-choking device
Sheffield based adult care provider Moorville has been praised by local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) for its use of an innovative anti-choking device.
The family run company, which offers supported living, residential and respite care for people with learning disabilities or autistic spectrum disorders, has introduced Dechoker into its care plans and risk assessments.
Registered Manager Ryan West said: “Both visitors from Sheffield County Council and Clinical Commissioning Group were impressed with how responsive our service was in radically reducing the risk of choking for all our service users, especially those who are challenged with eating safely.
“The staff at all our sites are much more confident knowing that there is such an effective tool to hand.”
Delivering choking Basic Life Support (BLS) to someone that cannot stand up, such as a wheelchair user, presents obvious difficulties and puts them at a higher risk of death should a choking incident occur.
Dechoker can be used when a person choking is either sitting or lying down and works on both food or liquid.
Commercial Director, Matt Oakley at Dechoker UK, said: “It was great to hear from Ryan that their efforts are being recognised. We are proud to able to support them and the continued great work they do.”
