Director of Memory Care Jackie Pool yesterday shared details of the Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare Enriched Memory Care with Therapy service at the Dementia, Care & Nursing Home Expo in NEC, Birmingham.

The programme supports the recovery of cognitive function, what is known as ‘Rementia’, by focusing on the three areas of: nutrition; emotion; and function.

In nutrition, Jackie stressed the importance of a good diet and oral health. She explained the importance of anti-inflammatories, Omega 3, gluten free foods, low sugar and anti-oxidants in a good diet.

In the area of emotion, Jackie said: “Our role as carers is to support people through the high emotions they experience when living with dementia.”

She also stressed the importance of deep sleep in enabling the brain to refresh itself.

The provider’s Active Body/Active Minds approach helps residents stay active cognitively and supports their mental and physical well-being.

In the area of function, the provider focuses on cognitive impairments through its partnership with the University of Exeter’s Centre for Research.

“Cognitive stimulation therapy can have a massive impact,” Jackie noted.

Jackie stressed the importance of ‘effortful processing’, which entails encouraging residents’ to stimulate different parts of their brain through vocalising and repeating information at progressively longer intervals to help stimulate memory. Providing familiar, sensory landmarks to help people in way finding was also key, Jackie said. The director said involving the whole team in dementia therapy was central to providing consistency of care.
