Sussex care home placed in special measures

Sussex Health Care’s (SHC) Rapkyns Care Centre has been placed in special measures by the CQC.

The home was rated ‘inadequate’ by the CQC following an inspection in February.

The CQC said: “Staff had not taken measures steps to keep people safe, such as with behaviours that may challenge others.

“People were not consistently protected from abuse as incidents were not audited to effectively spot trends and reduce the risk of abuse.”

The report added that too few nurses were deployed in the daytime with agency nurses struggling to cover the centre’s two units.

Staff training to deal with epilepsy, emergency medicines or use of a de-choker device was found to be inadequate.  Areas such as constipation, epilepsy and people’s swallowing ability were also not effectively managed, the CQC added.

The report added that some people were observed receiving caring and kind support by staff who knew them well. People told inspectors they liked their staff and had enough to eat and drink and knew how to make a complaint.

An SHC spokesperson said: “We are extremely disappointed with the CQC’s findings. Providing the highest-quality care for those we look after and support for their families is our utmost priority. We are investing heavily in all our services, ensuring we can continually improve the levels of services we provide to the local community.

“A service improvement plan, which has been developed with the input of the management and staff team, has been put in place to progress aspects identified in the inspection. We are liaising closely with those we support and their families to allay any concerns they may have and working with them on how we are developing the service.”
