Sussex Health Care service taken out of special measures

A care home run by a service provider that is under police investigation has been taken out of special measures by the CQC.

The Granary in Horsham, which is run by Sussex Health Care (SHC), was rated Requires Improvement following an inspection in September and October.

The CQC said: “Relatives told us that their loved ones were safe at the Granary. Staff had received training on safeguarding adults and understood their roles and responsibilities to safeguard people from harm or abuse. The registered manager worked in partnership with healthcare professionals and learning was derived from incident, accidents and safeguarding concerns.”

While taking the service out of special measures, the CQC said it required “further development” in order to deliver support that was consistent with the values that underpin the CQC’s ‘Registering the Right Support’ (RRS) policy for providers of learning disability or autism services.

It noted, for example, that the care planning process did not always consider people’s goals or aspirations.

An SHC spokesperson said:  “We are very pleased that the CQC’s latest report highlights the recent improvements and progress that has been made in supporting those we look after.

“We pride ourselves on creating a caring environment for our residents. As such, it is heartening to see that is this reflected by the CQC in their report, which acknowledges how residents are treated with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect and notes our staffs’ commitment to delivering high quality, responsive and compassionate care.

“We have taken on board the wider findings from the report and are implementing measures to improve the service further. We continue to invest in the home and are committed to enhancing the care and support we provide to all our residents.”

SHC is subject to a period of increased monitoring and support by local authority commissioners as well as a police investigation due to concerns raised about the provider.
