Unsafe moving and handling practices found at Derbyshire care home

A Derbyshire care home has been told to improve after unsafe lifting and handling practices were found during a CQC inspection.

Nether Hall in Hartshorne, which is run by Larchwood Care, was given a ‘requires improvement’ rating following the inspection in December.

The CQC said: “There was a lack of understanding about how to keep people safe when assisting them to move or transfer to a different chair. We saw on three occasions when some people were assisted to move staff used unsafe practices such as lifting under their arms or using their trousers to pull them into a different position. We also saw consideration had not been given to people’s feet when moving and where they were unable to weight bear, their legs became crossed and their feet dragged.”

Staff were also criticised for the “unsafe” practice of encouraging people to use their walking aids rather than stand aids when assisting people to get up.

The CQC noted staff had “detailed care plans” providing guidance on how people needed to be assisted but saw this was not always followed.

Staff said they had received moving and handling training but this was judged to have not been effective as not all team members had understood how to safely support people to move.

A Larchwood Care spokesperson said: “We were understandably disappointed that the report did not reflect the high standards we expect from our homes, and a robust action plan has already been put into place to make improvements based on the feedback.

“We were pleased to read the positive comments residents and relatives made about the new manager and team, and we are confident the CQC will see significant improvements at the next inspection.”
