Osmaston Grange Care Home in Belper, Derbyshire has been given a one-star food hygiene rating following an inspection.

The rating, which means major improvement is necessary, was given to the home following an inspection on March 14, Derbyshire Live reported.

The hygiene report, which was released following a Freedom of Information request, said chicken roll had been discovered on the premises with a March 3 use by date.

Inspectors were told that the chicken had been kept in the freezer contrary to food hygiene regulations. The inspectors also found bait boxes and mouse traps in the home and an electronic fly killer that was not in working order.

Other infringements included encouraging the growth of bacteria by defrosting ham at room temperature and storing raw egg shells next to a cling film-covered bowl of cream in a refrigerator.

The inspectors also expressed concern that staff had not reported that the kitchen did not have hot water. Hot water has been returned by the time of the inspectors’ return on March 15.

A spokesperson for the home said: “We have made a number of significant positive changes in the operation of our service.

“One of these changes has been the amalgamation of two kitchens into one – unfortunately in this instance the consequences of doing so has impacted negatively on our food hygiene rating.

“We have taken this matter very seriously and have already acted upon feedback provided during the inspection and identified within the inspection report.

“We accept that the rating falls below that standard previously achieved and are disappointed that this is not aligned to our ‘good’ CQC rating we achieved in January this year.

“We eagerly await the return visit of the inspector and are confident that our response and improvements made will be recognised and noted.”
