Care home residents evacuated following ‘huge fire’

Residents were yesterday evacuated from a Yorkshire care home following a fire in two neighbouring sheds.

The evacuation of The Old Coach House in Eastgate in Hessle took place yesterday morning.

A spokeswoman for the home said: “Staff where alerted at 6.45am by the smell of smoke at the rear of the property.

“The emergency services where called. The care staff evacuated all residents at the rear of the property to the local health centre across the road from us. The emergency services were on the scene very quickly.

“By the time the fire service arrived all residents who needed evacuated had been, any residents still in the home were deemed safe by the fire service upon arrival.”

The spokeswoman said all residents had been safely evacuated by staff thanks to a well-rehearsed fire procedure.

She added there had been no injuries and no-one was required to be seen by paramedics.

“The fire was contained outside of the property,” she said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
