Man charged with arson following care home fire

A man has been charged with arson following a fire at care home in Weston-super-Mare in Somerset.

Residents at the home were evacuated from Victoria Court care home on Saturday with two people taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said Alex Smith, aged, 55, of Victoria Park, Weston-super-Mare, had been charged with arson with intent and would appear at North Somerset Magistrates Court today.

The spokesperson added: “We were called to reports of a fire at a property in Victoria Park at about 9pm on Saturday. Occupants of the property were evacuated. Two people required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation.”

Bristol Live reported that firefighters has been called out to tackle the blaze which had begun in a first floor bathroom.

The report added one person had been treated for angina caused by shock but their condition was not thought to be serious.

Victoria is a two-storey care home accommodating six residents.

Victoria Court declined to comment when contacted by CHP.
