National consensus emerging on social care funding, claims Prime Minister

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said there is an “emerging national consensus” on social care funding.

Speaking yesterday on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, the Prime Minister said the Conservatives would ensure that no-one would be forced to sell their home to pay for their care.

Mr Johnson said: “I think there is an emerging national consensus about this and that we are getting ready for, as it were, a Beveridge moment when people understand that we do need as a nation to tackle this and what we want to do is to reach across politics to bring people together.

“We’ll ensure no-one is forced to sell their home to pay for their care and everybody will have dignity and security in their old age.”

Mr Johnson has come under increasing criticism since taking up office for the lack of a delivery of the “clear plan” he promised for social care in his first speech as Prime Minister.

The Conservatives election manifesto, which included a pledge for an additional £1bn for social care each year, was criticised for its lack of specific measures.

When further pressed by Mr Marr yesterday on his lack of delivery of his promised “clear plan”, Mr Johnson said: “I accept that the full plan needs to be developed.”
