Orchard Care Homes to pay under 25s National Living Wage

Orchard Care Homes has announced that it will pay all care staff under the age of 25 at least £8.21 per hour, in the hope of encouraging them to stay in the care sector for longer.

The new rate is between 51p and £4 per hour more than the National Minimum Wage for young people, depending on the age of the employee.

According to government guidelines, people aged under 18 should be paid at least £4.35 per hour and those aged between 21 and 24 should be paid £7.70 per hour. The National Living Wage for workers aged 25 and over is £8.21.

Orchard, a Harrogate-based provider, said it believes that the move to increase the hourly rate across all of its homes will recognise the “excellent work all  staff do across their homes, whatever their age” and encourage them to stay in the care sector.

Hayden Knight, CEO of Orchard Care Homes, said: “We believe that all care staff should be paid fairly for the great job they do. By increasing our hourly pay for under 25s, our aim is to encourage more young people to join this rewarding profession.

“We have also invested in our professional career care pathways, so young people can join us, learn on the job and have opportunities to take on more senior roles.”

Orchard Care Homes provides senior living care in the North of England and the Midlands, offering residential, nursing and respite care, as well as specialist dementia provision in a compassionate and safe environment.
